The Way - Part 3
The early church described in Acts 2: 40-47 wasn't just a historical moment but the beginning of a continuing movement that believers are still part of today. The word continued appears twice in this passage, emphasizing that their faith was built on sustained devotion rather than a single experience. They continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and continued daily with one accord in the temple, understanding that Pentecost was the beginning of a lifestyle of divine encounter.
Two foundational values shaped their community. First, they had a deep love for God's presence, prioritizing worship, prayer, and the Holy Spirit above everything else. They gladly received God's Word, living by every word that proceeded from the mouth of the Lord. Remarkably, Pentecost fell on the same day Jews celebrated receiving the Torah, showing that Word and Spirit work together. Second, they demonstrated deep love for community, fulfilling Jesus' greatest commandments to love God and love others. Their fellowship wasn't superficial—they shared everything, sold possessions to help those in need, and broke bread together regularly.
These values produced beautiful results: gladness in their hearts, signs and wonders, fear of the Lord, favor with all people, and daily growth as the Lord added to the church. They continued because they kept their eyes on Jesus and maintained the environment for the Holy Spirit to move. This was about Holy Spirit habitation, not just visitation—understanding that believers are God's dwelling place and He's looking for a home, not temporary housing. The fear of the Lord created reverence that allowed signs and wonders to flow naturally, while divine favor opened doors as they walked in obedience to God's calling.
